Ted's Story

My relationship with wood started over 30 years ago while trekking along a hill in the Andes Mountains with my wife-to-be, Rose. We approached three Peruvian farmers, tilling the rocky soil at the foot of the mountain with a hand plow. The beauty of the plows worn, knotted handle captivated me. I bought that plow for $20.

El Ateliers Location
Peru is one of the world’s most biodiverse countries, encompassing the driest desert on the planet, the Atacama, the Amazon Rain Forest, often called the lungs of the planet, and the high-reaching Andes Mountains. We lived on the dry desert coast of Northern Peru, an hour’s drive south of Ecuador where we ran our pipe yard, and this is where El Atelier began. As my children grew, we wanted them to finish their education in the U.S., so El Atelier’s second workshop opened when the family moved to Houston.

The Wood

Pick up the Atelier piece. Feel the surface. Smell the wood. The walls, barely thicker than an eggshell, reveal the veins, knots, and natural coloring of the wood. All this is brought together by nature and the artistry of the turner who aspires to reveal its inner secrets. It relaxes you. You feel good!
